Eugénia Nogueira, a PhD student of PDBMA under the supervision of Ana Preto (CBMA) and Artur Cavaco-Paulo (CEB), was awarded the Skinner Prize for the Best Poster Presentation by the Royal Society of Chemistry. Eugénia is developing a nanoparticle for controlling drugs release for the treatment of cancer and chronic inflammatory diseases, like rheumatoid arthritis.

The II Symposium of the PhD Programme on Molecular and Environmental Biology, organized by the PhD students from the 2nd and 3rd edition (2010-2011, 2011-2012) of the Doctoral Programme in Molecular and Environmental Biology (PDBMA), took place on the 27th November 2014 at the School of Sciences Amphitheatre. This meeting intended to show the PDBMA in a scientific perspective, as well as to give the opportunity to the students to present their personal experiences throughout the development of their PhD thesis. The program included lectures held by Cândida Lucas and Pedro Soares, student presentations, and poster sessions. A prize for the best poster was attributed to João Silva.

Margarida Casal was invited to give a talk about the future of Bioentrepreneurship in the event "Biology Week". This activity was promoted by NEBAUM (Núcleo de Estudantes de Biologia Aplicada) together with ANEBio (Associação Nacional de Estudantes de Biologia), 2nd December 2014.

Eugénia Nogueira was interviewed by CiênciaHoje about her work “Characterization of a peptide as a membrane anchor in liposomes for the incorporation of ligands for specific targeting”, awarded recently by the Royal Society of Chemistry with the “Skinner Prize for the Best Poster Presentation”. This work is part of the European project Nanofol, which aims to develop methods of diagnosis/therapy capable of providing the most effective treatments for chronic inflammatory diseases than existing ones.

Presentation session of the work on the first phase of the strategic theme "Sustainability in Urban Environment", through the project "The Stream and the City". As part of the presentation of the project, it will be inaugurated on the same day the exhibition entitled "The Stream and the City." “Stitch by Stitch the Science Fills the Space” in White Night 2014 – Braga / Independent Programming. The "White Night" is a cultural and entertaining event that celebrates the city, the infrastructures and the culture and consists in an initiative opened to the visitors and all the community meeting the challenge of organizing cultural events and leisure activities for all tastes and ages. The chocolate Factory AVianense, laboring since 1914, celebrates this year its centenary in partnership with the project STOL. In that way, the boxes of differente sizes of chocolates Emperor, one of the icons of this brand, were furnished with 12 000 small leaflets informing that chocolate is a health food, that is digested easily and that, when eaten in moderation, lowers the risk of cardiovascular disease.

As part of the STOL mission, STOL promoted some activities in institutions for elderly with objectives to i) communicate some science concepts, (ii) enhance the interaction between generations, (iii) motivate the users of these institutions to actively participate in projects and (iv) create/mobilize dynamic active behaviors, especially at the level of fine motor skills and reasoning. 31st October 2014.

Photographic documentary exhibition about marginal coastal ecosystems of northern Portugal, corresponding to a transition area between ocean and adjacent terrestrial systems, which has specific characteristics resulting from the interaction between the ocean, terrestrial mass and the atmosphere, that is not only reflected in the physical and biological processes but also in living beings that live there. Exhibition held in the framework of cooperation between the CMIA - Viana do Castelo, the CBMA and SPVS. Supported by FEDER, cross-border project Team Minho, 13th November 2014.
