Welcome!

The University of Minho and the Iberian Society of Limnology (AIL) invite you to join us at the XVIth Congress of the Iberian Society of Limnology in Guimarães (Portugal) from 2 to 6 of July 2012.

The focal theme of the congress is Current threats to freshwater ecosystems: challenges and opportunities. Freshwaters provide vital services for humanity but increasing pressures, from a multitude of sources (e.g. climate change, invasive species, pollution, loss and fragmentation of habitat, overexploitation), threaten the future availability of those services, including basic commodities as the availability of drinking water. The XVIth AIL Congress will provide an opportunity to address those outstanding questions, and discuss the most up to date fundamental and applied knowledge on freshwater biology, ecology and environmental management.

The beautiful historical city of Guimarães, where the Portuguese nation was established in the early 12th century, has a unique medieval city centre classified as World Heritage by UNESCO. Additionally, Guimarães hosts many cultural events, as it will be the European Capital of Culture in 2012.

We are looking forward to your participation in this exciting meeting.

On the behalf of the organizing committee,
Fernanda Cássio and Cláudia Pascoal
