Threats to biodiversity, river ecosystem health and human wellbeing

Anfiteatro do Departamento de Biologia, Campus de Gualtar, Braga, 17 de dezembro, 14h-16h.

Lab Paisagem

This activity will promote awareness for the role of biodiversity in the functioning of rivers and the threats caused by human activities. It includes a brief theoretical presentation and two practical activities. The first practical activity will demonstrate the role of biodiversity in the functions performed by the rivers and will show how invasive species can affect native species therefore compromising the functioning of many rivers. The second practical activity aims at demonstrating how human activities can affect the relationship between the health of river ecosystems and the benefits they provide to ensure human wellbeing.

Workshop on the importance of green spaces

November 25, 2015, 14-17h

University of Minho, CPII, auditorium B2

A workshop on the importance of green spaces aiming at creating a botanical garden at the Minho University took place at the Campus de Gualtar on 25 November. The event was organized by the Association of Applied Biology Students (NEBAUM) and by Profs Fernanda Cássio and Cláudia Pascoal of the Department of Biology of the School of Sciences. The invited speakers focused on case studies and described the difficulties, the challenges and the opportunities arising from the implementation of new green spaces and new botanical gardens. The event was attended by about 200 participants, including representatives of the Rectory and the City Council of Braga.

The Vice-Director of CBMA, Andreia Gomes, participates in the TV programme “Sociedade Civil” – RTP2, 15th June 2015.

Synopsis: Adrenaline Addicts

Adrenaline is a hormone produced in response to stress. It produces a number of physiological effects and stimulates our “fight of flight” responses. When in face of danger, this sensation reminds us we are alive and such moments become unforgettable.

The offer of experiences for making the commoner wish to live on the edge has been growing due to increased demand. These activities have some underlying danger and risk, often associated to high speed or heights, extreme conditions or, most of the times, a combination of all of this.

Our paper Pydna: a simulation and documentation tool for DNA assembly strategies using python [1] was the second most popular on the BMC Bioinformatics website.

ypkWhat is pydna?

Planning large genetic constructs with many parts, such as recombinant metabolic pathways is usually done manually using a DNA sequence editor which quickly becomes unfeasible as scale and complexity increase.

The Pydna python package provide a human-readable formal description of cloning and assembly strategies which also allows for automatic computer simulation and verification.

Pydna provides simulation of:
.     restriction digestion
.     ligation
    PCR
.     primer design
.     Gibson assembly
.     homologous recombination

A cloning strategy expressed in pydna is complete, unambiguous and stable. Pydna has been designed to be understandable for biologists with limited programming skills. Pydna simplifies planning and sharing of cloning strategies and is especially useful for complex or combinatorial DNA molecule construction.

Look at some assembly strategies made in the IPython notebook format here !
