Science Through Our Lives (STOL) is a project that was born on September 2011 inside a group of three CBMA investigators aware of the importance/commitment of science communication in the present society. STOL was idealized as a cultural, scientific and educational project with a privileged place at the interfaces: university - society and education - research.
At presente STOL is coordinated by Alexandra Nobre (CBMA member) and has several ongoing projects and partnerships with public and private institutions.
In what concerns to STOL actions, STOL: develops activities in various areas such as education and training, promotes and participates in scientific/ cultural events, gets involved in the publication and dissemination of academic and science communication products, provides several services such as technical and scientific advice, disseminates research projects and researchers (in particular from CBMA) and has a Science Communication page in the web.

Exhibition "Losing images of the past? Not even in beans!"- Nov. 17 to Dec. 2 - Auditorium of Escola Sá de Miranda - Braga

AThis exhibition, held in the scope of 2016 - International Year of Pulses showns old parietal pictures and school manuals, as well as some preserved animal and vegetable specimens, belonging to the historical heritage of the Escola Sá de Miranda School. There will also be teaching materials produced by STOL and  Escola Sementes de Liberdade. This exhibition is a conseguence of  the project in  Applied Biology degree "The teaching of Natural Sciences through the image - Journey to the Past", by Ana Rita Gomes, under the guidance of Alexandra Nobre and Paula R. Nogueira, in collaboration with Escola Sá de Miranda.

PubhD UMinho - Ninth session - Guimarães - 27/10/16

AnonasA glass full of Science - PubhD UMinho ((pub + PhD) consists of an individual presentation of doctoral projects. In the second season, after summer, we changed the format into two PhD projects presentation (previously were three).The participants have a white board, a pen and 10 minutes to talk about their research projects, followed by 20 minutes in which the assistance can ask questions. Approach science to the citizens and raise other research perspectives that can open new opportunities for research, are the great challenges of this initiative.The idea began in a pub, in Nottingham, in 2014 and reached Portugal (Lisbon) in 2015. PubhD UMinho is a monthly event organized by STOL since January 2016 and will run across alternately two cities in the north of Portugal - Guimarães and Braga.

The city of Guimarães welcomed the ninth session of PubhD UMinho, at C.A.R. Cafetaria Arte e Recreio, on 27th of October.

In this session Cláudia Amorim and Filipa Ribeiro were with us to talk about "Valorization of agroindustrial residues" and  "Social Networks for Scientists", respectively.

Festival of the Pulses - 16 October - MUHNAC / Lisbon

AOn October 16 - World Food Day - the pulses have taken the leading role in the “Festival of the Pulses” an event  dedicated to food security, health, nutrition and sustainability of food resources. With activities for all ages, exhibitors, cooking workshops and demonstrations and entertainment, this festival meant to be a cultural event aimed at the whole population and underlying theme "Climate is changing". The Food and Agriculture will have to follow this change. ". This event took place at the Tropical Botanical Garden, Bethlehem, from 10h00 to 19h00. Invited by MUHNAC - Museu Nacional de História Natural e da Ciência, STOL and its partner Escola Sementes de Liberdade were present at the ludic area with several games including Fabacea.

"Fabaceae - The Kingdom of improbable love" 16 Oct, 5:00 pm, Municipal Auditorium of Esposende

facebThis show consists of alive-reading and interpretation, using manipulated puppets and illustrations, of the story "Fabaceae - The Kigdom of improbable love", by the students and teachers of Escola Sementes de Liberdade. The tale tells the story of "Vigna unguiculata" and "Lens esculenta", two pulses whose impossible love tries to "germinate" a happy ending. 

This work is included in the project "Ideias Leguminosas" (a partnership between STOL-Science Through Our Lives and Escola Sementes de Liberdade) that celebrates 2016 - International Year of Pulses. The theatre also has de support of Esposende Ambiente and Esposende Town Hall.

Course "Mourning: Health or disease?" - IE / Universidade Minho - 14-15/10/16 Book "From Grief" (Do Luto) - public presentation

 

a"Mourning: Health or disease?" - Short Course on mourning, with certification of presence, directed to any type of public, especially educators (formal, non-formal and informal) and caregivers (formal, non-formal and informal). Organization from Clara Costa Oliveira,  director of the Master in Education Sciences, Specialty in Health Education IE UMinho and member of STOL team.

Parallel to the course follows the presentation of the book "From Grief" (Do Luto) Organizers: J. Correia Jesuino and Clara Costa Oliveira with written presentation "Grief - A quantum leap from an angular hammer to a round pebble" Alexandra Nobre (CBMA - STOL-Science Through Our Live).
