Stranding of a whale in Viana do Castelo - Portuguese Wildlife Society

Last Monday, SPVS (Portuguese Wildlife Society) was contacted following the stranding of a whale in Viana do Castelo. The biologists belonging to the SPVS team, Dr. Jorge Santos and Dr.Hélder Araújo, moved to the location and performed the biometric analysis and necropsy of the cetacean that was already in an advanced state of decomposition. The strandings of cetaceans are frequent throughout the year in all our coast with several causes of death (accidental catches in fishing gear or bycatch, collisions with vessels, disease, old age, etc.) and casually enhanced by bad weather conditions that favor the disposal of carcasses on the beach.

SPVS is an NGO that integrates the Rede Abrigos - Rede de Apoio a Mamíferos Marinhos (RAMM) of Instituto de Conservação da Natureza e Florestas (ICNF) since 2003 and is responsible for this type of events in the north of the country (Caminha-Nazaré) and the Algarve. It's action is the result of a strong cooperation between the maritime authorities, ICNF and municipalities - more information on http://socpvs.org
