Advanced Course in Microbial Genomics

SCOPE OF THE COURSE

This course will provide advanced formation in microbial genomics. Participants will be introduced to advanced genomic concepts, next generation sequencing technologies and will be challenged to use bioinformatic tools to build, extract and explore genomic information. The course will have a strong bioinformatic experimental component directed toward user-friendly environments.

TOPICS

This course includes theoretical modules on the following topics:

  • Introduction to microbial genomics: Genome structure and organization; Mobile elements; Core and mobile genomes; Genomics in communities: metagenomics.

  • Genome sequencing technologies: Roche 454; Solexa/Illumina; SOLID; IonTorrent; 3rd generation sequencing (single molecule).

  • Genome reconstruction: genome assembly pipelines and gap closure.

  • Genome annotation: databases, pipelines and validation.

  • Exploring and extracting biological information from sequenced genomes: comparative genomics of microbial pathogens.

  • Functional genomics: transcriptomics and proteomics.
