Current Research & Key Publications

The mainstream interests relate with the yeast cell wall and extracellular matrix (ECM), which detailed molecular characterization is under way in Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Candida albicans. This work is in line with the more general aim of unveiling a putative novel morphogenic Hedgehog-like signalling pathway in lower eukaryotes, as suggested by the experimental evidence from the last decade relating to the GUP1 gene. This was originally discovered by our work in association with defects on glycerol transport. It actually encodes an MBOAT 0-acyltransferase involved in a vast diversity of cellular processes, and very similar to the higher Eukaryotes HHAT proteins.

Key words: Yeast, cell wall, plasma membrane, extracellular matrix, signalling, Hedgehog

A second line of interest derives from the previous work on glycerol transport and metabolism regulation in yeasts, S. cerevisiae and other less conventional ones. The biotechnological implications of glycerol production and utilization in yeasts are manifold. Presently, our group dedicates to improve S. cerevisiae ability to consume glycerol for biomass production or, alternatively, for ethanol production. This metabolic engineering will allow the utilization of the biodiesel industry glycerol-rich waste by re-introducing it in the biofuel production cycle.

The work is presently being developped in close collaboration with Rogélio Brandão from the NUPEB, Federal Unviersity of Ouro Preto, Brazil, and under the finantial support of a Bolsa Pesquisador Visitante Especial - Programa Ciências sem Fronteiras - CAPES.

Further work aims at developing a yeast-based methodology for the utilization of the wastes from sugar-cane bio-ethanol industry in Brazil for the production of glycerol for frther use in the production in loco of biodiesel. This work is under the finantial support of FAPESP, Brazil, and is being done in cooperation with the company FERMENTEC from Piracicaba, SP, Brazil.

Key words: yeast, glycerol, biodiesel, bioethanol, biofuels, energetic sustainability.
