Invasive species as resource subsidies: functional importance

Current Research & Key Publications

The central question of my project is to address how the invasive species Corbicula fluminea (Müller, 1774) changes above and belowground processes in aquatic and adjacent terrestrial areas? The answer to this question will be obtained through the execution of 5 tasks (T): T1. Assessment of temporal variations in C. fluminea and other sympatric mollusk species density, biomass and distribution in the Minho River; T2. Assessment of the importance of C. fluminea as a resource subsidy to adjacent terrestrial areas: effects on bacterial and fungal communities and nutrients (belowground compartment); T3. Assessment of the importance of C. fluminea as a resource subsidy to adjacent terrestrial areas: effects on terrestrial macroinvertebrates and on a plant species (aboveground compartment); T4. Understanding the main mechanisms responsible for the higher biomass, density and diversity of estuarine macrozoobenthos, fungi and bacteria in the presence of C. fluminea; T5. Integrated analysis and creation of an integrative model showing the ecological changes mediated by die-offs of C. fluminea. The most novel aspect of this research plan is the use of a multidisciplinary integrated approach combining ecology and microbiology to estimate possible impacts at the ecosystem level. Furthermore, the results of the project will also be useful for management and mitigation of the impacts resulting from C. fluminea invasion in aquatic ecosystems.
