BSc in Biology by the University of Porto in 1999; concluded PhD in Molecular Medicine (Neurology)at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, in 2004. Post-doctoral training at the Molecular Medicine Institute and IGC - Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência in Lisbon, Portugal. Assistant Professor at the Biology Department of the University of Minho since 2007.

 Productivity and Supervision:

In the last years supervised 3 post-doc grantees (4 ongoing), 4 concluded PhD thesis (3 ongoing), 28 Master Thesis (3 ongoing), 1 ongoing Project scholarship grantee, 4 BI grants and several final degree projects. AG has an h-index (ISI) of 15, author of 3 patents (National and International) for compaction, delivery and transfection of genetic material to target cells, 2 Book Chapters, 78 FULL PAPERS and proceedings SCI. Her current research interests focus on the interface of nanostructured systems and cells and tissues, in order to optimize the biological and/or therapeutic effect. Compounds and/or natural origin extracts with bioactivity the the level of inflammation or oxidative stress processes are the topic of intense research at her group.


Specific Research Interests (and interactions) in Brief:

Nanotoxicity of nanostructured materials

The development of nanotechnological solutions for biomedical applications has been a major focus of interest over recent years. Nevertheless, potential adverse impact of nanomaterials on human health is yet to be fully understood, and the molecular events involved in nanoparticle toxicity need further in depth studies.

We address nanotoxicity in a broad sense, by assessing the effects of exposure to different nanostructured materials using both in vitro and in vivo parameters. We have recently set up the zebrafish embryo toxicity (ZET) assay as an informative platform for screening nanotoxicity.

Development of nanocarriers for biomedicine

In a multidisciplinary effort with Prof. Maria Elisabete Real Oliveira (Dept. Physics, UMinho), we have been working with liposomes composed of MO and cationic lipids from the dioctadecyldimethylammonium family (DODAX, where X stands for Br or Cl). for nucleic acids/drug delivery. This system has also been explored as a vaccine for candidiasis with Prof. Paula Sampaio (Dept. Biology, UMInho). The incorporation of cationic lipids – Gemini – synthesized by Prof. Eduardo F Marques’s group (UPorto) is a promising alternative for effective delivery of nucleic acids. Cell transfection

Skin aging and wound healing: underlying mechanisms and approaches to regulate it

This work evolves as a synergy with different partners and research groups. We aim to characterize the molecular basis of specific processes such as hair greying (Prof. Artur Cavaco-Paulo, Dept. Biological Engineering, UMinho) and develop strategies to control such processes (e.g. skin aging Dr. Cristóvão Lima, Dept. Biology, UMinho) also in the context of disease (e.g. antimicrobial solutions Prof. Margarida Casal and Dr. Raúl Machado, Dept Biology, UMinho; antioxidant/antiinflammatory natural plant extracts Prof. Alberto Dias, Dept. Biology, UMinho).

Modulation of EGFR signaling in cancer cells

A joint venture with Prof. Teresa Neves Petersen (Univ. Aalborg, Denmark) which aims to interfere with EGFR signaling in cancer cells using biophotonics. The aim is to regulate the pro-proliferative effect and formation of metastasis induced by activation of this key signaling pathway.
